Mr. Dugan is one of the original board members
who helped to “seed the idea" of Kestrel
Heights School in 1996. He was previously employed
as a teacher and coach at Apex High School in
Wake County and at both Vance High and Southern
Vance High in Vance County. He is a graduate of
Mars Hill College with a BA in History and a Master
of School Administration from North Carolina Central
University. He has 20 years of experience in public
schools teaching everything from psychology and
U.S. History to personal fitness. He currently
teaches a course on current affairs and issues.
Mr. Dugan, and his wife Mary, have three children:

Mr.
Mitchell joined the Kestrel family in 2003 and has
worked in many departments and areas of the school,
including mathematics, Spanish, and awareness of
language. Mr. Mitchell is the Middle School Director,
Athletic Director, and works with various athletic
teams. Mr. Mitchell is a graduate of North Carolina
A&T State University (BA - Romance Languages
and BS - Secondary Education) and has taught in
Montgomery County Public School, Maryland and Bertie
County Schools, North Carolina. As part of the Kestrel
family, Mr. Mitchell has earned many awards and
accomplishments, including 2004 Teacher of the Year! |

Ms.
Buckholz joined Kestrel Heights School in 1998.
Prior to starting at KHS she was employed by a
private school in Hillsborough, NC for one year.
In 1997 she and her family moved to Oxford, NC
from Pittsburgh, PA, where she homeschooled her
4 children for 17 years. Some of her loves include
bible study, homeschooling, writing plays, making
costumes, directing plays and organizing writing/art
clubs and elementary math clubs. Her younger two
sons attended KHS. Mrs. Buckholz is happy to return
to the classroom this year, teaching Apparel Design. |

Vines, Guidance Counselor and Testing Coordinator

Mrs.
Vines joined Kestrel Heights School in 2006. She
is a St. Louis native and received her undergraduate
degree in Education from Lincoln University of
Missouri, in 1995. She also received her teaching
certificate at that time. She completed her Master's
of Education in School Guidance Counseling from
St. Louis University in 2001. Mrs. Vines was previously
employed at her alma mater, Roosevelt High School
in St. Louis, MO, as a Guidance Counselor. Mrs.
Vines is active at Kestrel as well as in the community.
She has one son, Atrion, and is married.

Spearman, Exceptional Children and Special Programs

Mr.
Spearman joined Kestrel Heights School in 2007.
He brings over 19 years of public school teaching
experience to Kestrel, kindergarten through high
school in both Durham Public and Granville County
Schools. He was last assigned with DPS at Chewning
Middle School where he served as the Exceptional
Children's Facilitator. He has taught middle school
language arts, math, science, and social studies,
and also served as the Athletic Director at Butner-Stem
Middle School. Doug graduated from Durham Technical
Institute, Durham N.C., with an AAS degree in
Criminal Justice, Shaw University, Raleigh N.C.,
BA degree in Criminal Justice, and North Carolina
Central University, Durham, N.C., M.Ed. Degree,
Special Education. He continues to study online,
and is seeking a Ph.D. degree in Educational Psychology.
Mr. Spearman is married with three girls and three
boys and a crew of loving grandchildren. He enjoys
biblical history, flying, reading and writing
and of course, helping children reach their unknown
potential. |
Suzanne
Vargas, Admissions

Ms.
Vargas joined Kestrel Heights School in 2006.
Before working at KHS, she was a homemaker and
took an active role in the community as the service
unit manager with Girls Scouts of America, tutoring
kindergaren students at Parkwood Elementary School,
and working with the Parkwood Association and
the youth club at her church. Outside of school,
Ms. Vargas loves to watch and play football, cook
for friends and family, and explore North Carolina
with her children. Ms. Vargas resided in Chicago,
IL in 2001 where she worked in the media industry.
She currently lives in Durham with her four daughters,
one who has attended Kestrel since 2006. She looks
forward to her other three girls joining Kestrel
in the future. |
