the Kestrel Heights School Board of Directors |
The
Kestrel Heights School Board of Directors works closely
with Kestrel’s administration to ensure that each
and every one of our students’ needs are being met
100% of the time. Board meetings start at 6:30 p.m. at
the school (see the schedule at the right) and you are
welcome to attend. If you have questions, comments, or

Grace
Marsh |

Grace Marsh is a native of
Baltimore, Maryland and has lived in Durham
for 34 years. She is a graduate of North Carolina
Central University where she received a Bachelor's
Degree in Criminal Justice/Public Administration
in 1981.
Grace
is a trained mediator and facilitator and has
served as the Executive Director of The Elna B.
Spaulding Conflict Resolution Center (formerly
Women In Action for the Prevention of Violence
and Its Causes, Inc.) since 2001. Her interest
and support for charter schools grew out of having
a granddaughter attend Research Triangle Academy.
After her grand-daughter entered Kestrel at sixth
grade, she decided that she wanted to contribute
to the success of the school by joining its board
of directors.
Marsh
currently serves on the City/County Violence Prevention
Committee and Project Safe Neighborhoods Steering
Committee.

Emory
"Mac" Bare | Vice

Emory
McMillan "Mac" Bare is a long-time
Durham resident and former Kestrel parent whose
two sons attended Kestrel in its earliest days.
A native of Ashe County, N.C. and a 1974 graduate
of the UNC-Chapel Hill with BA degrees in chemistry
and Russian history, he also graduated from
Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Ft. Worth,
Texas. Since 1978 he has been a pastor in Durham,
currently at Dayspring Fellowship. In addition
to the Kestrel Heights Board, he has served
on boards for the Carolina Study Center and
for Pregnancy Support Services; volunteered
with CONTACT, a community telephone crisis hotline;
served as a officer of the West Durham Exchange
Club; and is currently on the leadership team
of Durham Ministers in Prayer, a group seeking
to create spiritual unity and prayer for the
city of Durham among Durham's churches and ministers.

Rob
Matheson |

Rob
Matheson is currently the Assistant Principal
for Instruction at Apex High School, Apex, N.C.
He is one of the founding board members and
teachers at Kestrel Heights School (KHS), and
served as Dean of Faculty and Director at KHS
between 1998-2004. Before coming to KHS, he
worked at Apex HS where he was a biology teacher
and chairman of both the Science Department
and School Improvement Committee between 1991-98.
Mr. Matheson's years of experience prior to
Apex HS include: coordinator of a statewide
biotechnology education project in NC for teachers
in grades 7-12, biology teacher at Broughton
HS (Raleigh, NC), 7 th grade life science teacher
at Ravenscroft School (Raleigh, NC), and fisheries
biologist at the Duke University Marine Laboratory
and National Marine Fisheries Service Laboratory
in Beaufort, NC. Mr. Matheson has coached high
school soccer and baseball, as well as middle
school basketball. Mr. Matheson received his
B.S. and M.S. degrees in Zoology from North
Carolina State University, and is a fall 2006
candidate for a Master of School Administration
degree from N.C. Central University.

Kim
Anglin |

Kim
Anglin had 2 children attend Kestrel Heights Charter
School. His son was in the first 6th grade class.
He and his wife Peggy have 3 children. He and
his wife are natives of Illinois. They moved to
Durham in August, 1978. Kim graduated in 1977
from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana
with a bachelor's degree in Accountancy. He passed
the CPA exam in 1977. His CPA practice is primarily
working with local nonprofit organizations. With
this background, Kim has served the community
on numerous boards of directors. The organizations
include Meals on Wheels of Durham, Durham Nursery
and Preschool, Durham Sports Club, Pearsontown
Elementary School PTA, Jordan High School PTSA,
Jordan High School Athletic Booster Club, Woodcroft
Athletic Association, Durham Symphony, Durham
Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission, and
Triangle Presbyterian Church. His hobby is running
on roads and trails. He has run 10 marathons and
is a past president of Carolina Godiva Track Club.

Josephe
Featherstone |

Josephé
Featherstone was born in Greenville, NC and currently
resides in Durham, NC with his wife, Robin and
their sons Zachariah and Jayce. He is a graduate
of Shaw University where he majored in Education
and minored in Theatre. He is preparing to further
his education and pursue a Master's Degree in
Divinity.
He
is the Membership Engagement Director at the Durham
YMCA and has been involved with the Outreach program.
In addition, he is a licensed, ordained minister
at the youth minister at Rhema Word World Church,
a chaplin for the Durham YMCA, a YMCA liaison
for E-Town at North Carolina Central University
and the President of the Zeta Male Network.
Josephé has done motivational speaking,
coordinated youth conferences, created a drama
ministry (Desiring Restoration And Majestic Acts
(D.R.A.M.A), co-chaired Students Transplanted
and In Christ (STIC), and mentored and tutored
at-risk and single parent youths. He
is determined to motivate, encourage, educate
and stir up the gift that is in this generation
of young people through positive activities and
spiritual guidance.

Scott
Owen |

Scott
is a graduate of The University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor's degree in History
and Political Science. Scott also received Associate
degrees from Durham Technical Community College
in Business Administration, Accounting, and Operations
Management. While serving for eight years in the
Navy and Navy Reserve, he earned a Masters in
Business Administration from American Military
University. He serves the community as a Middle
School Youth Leader and a deacon at Triangle Presbyterian
Church. In the spring, Scott coaches little league
baseball in the Parkwood community. He is researching
and writing a book on regional transportation
history. Scott is married to Elizabeth Owen and
has two children; one who is a former Kestrel.

Luann
Pollock |

Luann
Pollock brings a variety of experience to the
Kestrel Board, having served and chaired on many
special education foundations and committees in
New Jersey for 10 years. She is a proud advocate
of charter schools and in particular, the need
for schools to promote the social well being of
its students by teaching them in a gentle, personalized
setting where their individual strengths are noticed
and rewarded.
Luann was a Math major at Rutgers
University in 1980, and her son is a former Kestrel.
Her professional career includes managerial and
information architect positions at Prudential
HealthCare, and other NJ companies. She and her
family relocated to Durham in 2007. Luann plays
tennis and golf, and is a member of the Osher
Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke and the Duke
Chapel. |
| Kathleen
Sanders |

| Kathleen
graduated from The Ohio State University with
a degree in Chemical Engineering. After working
successfully in the field for many years, she
left the corporate world to concentrate on raising
her 4 children, all of whom attend(ed) Kestrel
Heights from 6th grade onward. Kathleen has a
deep love for Kestrel and especially appreciates
the strong dedication of the staff and the flexible
nature of Kestrel Heights in finding unique opportunities
for the children to expand their minds and experiences.
In addition to her background skills in engineering
and management she brings to the Board a variety
of experience with other Durham schools, an insiders
view of being a Kestrel, and a deep desire to
see Kestrel succeed in continuing to provide a
unique alternative to DPS offerings. Kathleen
is active in her church and outreach activiites,
especially tutoring opportunities. She enjoys
crocheting, reading, theater, and finding the
humor in family life. |
