- Kestrel Heights School has been serving the Durham
Community since 1998.
- We graduated our first senior class in June of 2007.
That year, we graduated 22 seniors and 21 of them attended
post-secondary schools.
- Former Kestrel students have furthered their educations
at NC School of Science and Mathematics, UNC-Chapel
Hill, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Pembroke, UNC-Wilmington,
Western Carolina University, Brown University, NCSU,
NCCU, NC A&T State University, Appalachian State
University, Virginia Military Institute, Randolph-Macon
College, US Air Force Academy, University of Vermont,
Barton College and Campbell University, among others.
- Kestrel is the only charter school in NC to have one
of its teachers named NC CharterTeacher of the Year,
twice!
- Sixth graders can participate on our athletic teams.
- The National Paideia Center at UNC is currently working
with our 8th grade students to produce training films
for teachers around the country.
- We have special events every year like: Field Day,
Arts Day, and Reading Olympics.
- We offer Band and Strings.
- For the last several years, we have earned the
Durham Crop Walk “Silver Sneaker Award”.

- Every student has the chance to take an overnight End of Year trip. Our students have visited Charleston, SC, Washington, DC, Williamsburg, Va., Myrtle Beach, SC, Wilmington, NC, Charlotte, NC, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
- We have an exchange program for Kestrel Heights students.
Students have traveled to Mexico, Costa Rica and Russia.
- We have a flourishing Japanese language program.
- Kestrel is a founding member of the Triangle Middle School Conference and the Central Carolina Athletic Conference for high school.
- Kestrel has a working partnership with the National Paideia Center @ UNC and the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill.
- We offer many extra-curricular activities such as Odyssey of the Mind, Math Counts, Debate Team, Science Fair, and more.
- The YMCA runs an after-school program and summer camp at Kestrel Heights School.
- Our students participate in school wide seminars discussing topics like: Integrity, Honesty, Citizenship, Love, Hate, Truth, Empathy, Human Rights, and more.
- Our students are often out and about in the community visiting local plays, ethnic restaurants, different places of worship, museums, college campuses, and concerts.
